Juni 1970 gelingt den Südtiroler Brüdern Reinhold und Günther Messner erstmals die Durchsteigung der Rupalflanke am Nanga Parbat, der mit 4500 Metern höchsten Fels- und Eiswand der Welt. Doch der Abstieg über die andere Seite ins Diamirtal endet tragisch mit Günthers Lawinentod.
Reinhold Messners eigene Darstellung wird verboten, er selbst zum Ziel jahrzehntelanger Rufmordkampagnen, den jüngeren Bruder seinem Ehrgeiz geopfert zu haben. "Die rote Rakete am Nanga Parbat", nach Jahren wieder erhältlich, ist sein Schlüsselwerk zur größten Kontroverse der jüngeren Alpingeschichte.
