Es ist so furchtbar fremd. Mit all dem, was ich früher war, hat das nichts mehr zu tun. Nein, lach bitte nicht, aber mir ist das alles so furchtbar fremd, so unverständlich, so weit ab. Er setzte sich auf den dunklen Boden und sah traurig vor sich hin. Mit früher hat das nichts mehr zu tun, sagte er, nichts, gar nichts.
Seine Antwort lautete: „Das einzige, was man vielleicht sagen kann, ist, dass das richtige Leben heute in der Gestalt des Widerstands gegen die von dem fortgeschrittensten Bewusstsein durchschauten, kritisch aufgelösten Formen eines falschen Lebens bestünde“. Widerstand sei „die eigentliche Substanz des Moralischen“.
Es war ein einziger Griff und sie spürte das Stroh auf der nackten Haut. Ihr Hose war weg - hatte sie mit geholfen ...sie wußte es nichts. Sie wußte nichts mehr. Nur, daß sie das alles wollte, er sollte Dinge mit ihr tun, wilde, harte, brutale Dinge, die sie nie gekannt und doch irgendwo ersehnt hatte.
Das Buch besteht aus zwölf Kapiteln. Es handelt sich dabei eher um eine Aneinanderreihung von Kurzgeschichten, die lose miteinander verbunden sind, in der Regel durch die wiederkehrenden Figuren. Für den Film wurden diese Kurzgeschichten adaptiert, d. h. mehr oder weniger umfangreich verändert, gestrafft und verdichtet.
